2023’s Top 100 LA Comics to Watch (80-61)
80. Mikey KcKernan
The king of the boo ha’s himself, Mikey McKernan, was like “I don’t care about your stupid lists.” It’s only that kind of fearlessness that gives you the #80 spot. Also, I featured for him in Tucson earlier this year and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a fun weekend despite our imperfect friendship. I know I can be a bit much.

77. Jenna Sparrow
Last April, I started running a bit about how LA is filled with fully grown ass adult women who identify as witches. There’s an act out where I pretend to be the Wicked Witch of the West screaming about astrology that I sometimes overdo. It’s called commitment but that’s not the point. As it turns out, Jenna is a witch. She could’ve easily beaten me with her broom and justifiably, but instead, she explained to me everything there is to know about the dark arts to make the bit better. That’s pretty cool if you ask me. Thank you Jenna Sparrow for being super funny and an incredible human being. I know too much about witchcraft, crystals and astrology now cause of you, but I’ve used that knowledge to my advantage on Hinge.

72. Emily Winter
This is Emily who just moved here. She’s a comedian, storyteller, published author, and writes for a TV show I’ve seen bus ads for. And get this, she’s one of my openers when I run Sorry Again at Oeno Vino on January 28th along side Kim McVicar and Earl Skakel. Billy Myers III is doing the cold open so get your tickets. It’s literally about to sell out. Congratulations, Emily! I hope this accolade does you wonders.

70. Mike Sasson
As I post this list, he is currently on stage hosting Lab Work at my home club the World-Famous Hollywood Improv with another one of my favorite comedians, Maxi Witrak. They’re doing a great job! Wish they’d pull me though. Lots of resolution comics here. It is what it is. Also he was the inaugural guest on my podcast The Ian Ira Rousso show.
65. Serafina Costanza
Back when Serafina used to cohost the late night Monday mic at Cinema Bar before the pandemic, I used to think she hated me. To be honest, I still think she does, but she had me on one of her shows recently which is only a testament to how funny I’ve gotten. I mean, she loves the Mall of America bit as far as I can tell. Here’s to you Serafina Costanza!

63. Josh Gibson
Not only is Josh Gibson funny, but he also knows funny. One night at Flappers, I was working on some words, some new tags for the lock of hair story. You see, after my set, I was ready to go to town on the rest of my flappy tots then Josh pulled me aside and was like “That story is fucking funny!” Thank you, Josh Gibson, and from one veteran to another, thank you for your service!

61. Mike Masilotti
I love what Mike Masilotti and his buddies have done with Third Wheel. I see their operation blossoming into something that’s going to have a very long-term presence in comedy, much like what it must’ve been like to be at The Comedy Store in the early 70’s, and I feel like I’m watching it unfold. That’s a cool thing to witness and I admire the hustle of him and his peers that are making it happen. Also, I fucking love is dog. Who could possibly rank higher than Mike Masilotti?
